For the Lord will not cast off for ever: But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies. For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.
Lamentations 3:31-33 (KJV)
When the news carries so many stories of sudden loss—the young stranded by storm, the sick overwhelmed by outbreak, those at sea facing deprivation—it can feel as though suffering spreads without limit or mercy. Yet the ancient voice of Lamentations speaks not from a place of denial of these griefs, but from within them, insisting that even in a season of real affliction, God’s compassion has not been withdrawn. The verse does not promise that sorrow will end quickly or that every prayer will reverse what has already happened; rather, it invites us to hold both truths at once: that suffering is real and that mercy is real, that the vulnerable deserve our attention and our care, and that lament itself can be a form of faith when spoken to the One who grieves with us.
