LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear; To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.

Psalm 10:17-18 (KJV)

When we read of mines collapsing, waste dumps burying the poor, children falling ill, and the vulnerable moved across borders like cargo, the Psalmist’s cry reaches across centuries with particular urgency. The prayer is not that God will punish the powerful, but that He will hear—that He will turn His ear toward those without voice or choice, those crushed by forces they did not create. To sit with this psalm today is to acknowledge that mercy and justice are not abstract ideals but desperately needed interventions on behalf of the defenseless. What does it mean for us to lend our ears, our resources, our attention to those the world has already discounted?
