lamentvulnerabilitymercycare for the vulnerable

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. unto...: Heb. to the broken of heart of a contrite...: Heb. contrite of spirit

Psalms 34:18 (KJV)

On a day when the news carries reports of violence, evictions, conflicts renewed, and the vulnerable pushed further to the margins, the psalmist’s promise arrives not as reassurance but as acknowledgment: brokenheartedness is witnessed. There is no promise here that suffering will be quickly resolved or that the powerful will suddenly relent, but rather that closeness itself—divine attentiveness to those whose hearts are fractured—constitutes a form of salvation. The verse invites us to consider what it means to remain present to suffering without rushing to fix it, and to hold the possibility that nearness, in itself, is not nothing.

What prompted this

Today's headlines reveal a world marked by widespread vulnerability: conflicts threaten ceasefires, violence against women intensifies, housing insecurity spreads across income levels, and those already displaced face further displacement. The common thread is human fragility in the face of forces—political, economic, environmental—that seem to overwhelm.
